Things to know about Hippos before starting a drawing

Hippopotamus means "river horse." The hippo, (medium weight 1.800 kgs / 4.000 pounds) lives in Africa. They are hoofed vegetarians, feeding on grass, fallen fruit, and occasionally on cultivated crops. They spend most of the day in the water. However they can live on land as well.

Drawing supplies you need

Pencil
Eraser
Paper
Colored markers or crayons (try to find different gray shades)

Tips : Use lightly sketched pencil lines first for the hippo structure. After, use a pen to draw in the final lines of you wild animal. When you're finished, erase the underlying pencil lines to reveal your hippopotamus drawing. Then - color it!

Follow the step by step instructions below and learn how to draw an amazing cartoon hippo in less than 5 minutes. You should add another 5 minutes to color in! Let's start drawing this cute wild animal!

STEP 1: Head and Muzzle. Start on the right part of your sheet of paper and make a perfect circle for the head of the hippo. Add a wide long shape on the right for the muzzle of the animal.

STEP 2: Hippo's Body shape. Starting from the perfect circle you've drawn first, add a big wide long shape on the left for the hippopotamus' body and belly.

STEP 3: Legs and feet. Add four rectangles for the legs under the body shape. Two under the back part and the other two under the front part. Make sure that the legs of your drawing are short and large enough. Add some half circles at the botttom of each leg to create the claws. Then, erase the dotted guidelines only.

STEP 4: Final touch. You are almost done! You just have to create your hippo's face expression. To do so, look at the Hippo below and draw two small circles for the nose, add a sligh curved line for the mouth, work on the eyes and add pupils and eyelids and finally draw the ears.
