How to Draw Caterpillar, Alice in Wonderland
I can't begin to tell you guys how many people have been asking me to do another tutorial on a specific character from Lewis Carroll's adventurous book, Alice in Wonderland. If you have an idea of who I am talking about, then you must be one of people that wanted this character as a lesson. Today, I will show all you aspiring artists, œhow to draw Caterpillar, from the very popular book turned Disney movie, Alice in Wonderland. This is an insect that has a lot of questions, riddles, and smoke. To many, he is referred to as the "Hookah Smoking Caterpillar" because of the fact that he spends his days and nights just lounging on mushroom caps smoking a hookah all by himself, and he loves every minute of it too. One of the most popular phrases that he is known for is when he says with a lengthy, breathy, "Whooo ... are ... you?". He says this to Alice when she first meets the carefree caterpillar relaxing on one of his mushroom couches. He is amongst the very first characters that she meets as she looks for a way back home. Alice even tells Caterpillar that, he will one day turn into a butterfly. The other beginning subjects that she has encounters with is White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, Dormouse, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and of course the Cheshire cat. He is a pretty easy insect to draw, and I think you will find that learning œhow to draw the Hookah Smoking Caterpillar, is going to be a lot easier than you thought possible. I hope you guys enjoy this lesson, and when you are done don't forget to let me know how your drawing came out. Adios amigos, and have a happy drawing day.....
Start this lesson by drawing a circle for the shape of the Caterpillar's head, and then add the face guidelines. Draw the one single line that will be the wire frame for his body.
Now, you will start sketching out the shape of Caterpillar's head structure. As you can see the front part of his head sort of curls inward like so. Continue this same lining to form the structure of the face, and the shape of the worm like body.
I used a reference picture to draw a pose for this Hookah smoking caterpillar, and that pose is showing him in a relaxing gesture. The arms are behind his head, and his face is squinty like he is inhaling his hookah smoke. Finish draw the shape of the back of his head, and then draw in the eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth hole. Next, draw the center lining which will separate the body from the belly.
Like all caterpillars, he too has multiple arms, and or legs. It's suggested that he has six legs and feet, and six arms and hands. Draw all of his arms behind his head, and then all the legs and feet spread out on the surface to add the sense of relaxation. His shoes look Arabian-ish, which means make sure you draw the curled tipped shoes properly. Add some detailing to the forehead, and chin, and then move to the next step.
All you have to do here is draw the belly lines that will add texture to this surface of the insect. When that is done, you can start erasing all the guidelines and shapes that you drew in step one.
For your last drawing step, all you have to do is draw in his eyeballs, and then draw the hookah stem in his mouth, and then draw the hookah's flexible straw or hose.
When you are done your drawing should look like the one you see here. I hope this is what you where looking for in a lesson when it comes to drawing Caterpillar, Alice in Wonderland. Color him in and you are all done!
