The White House Easter Egg Roll
President Rutherford B. Hayes was the first president to open White House grounds to children for the annual Easter Egg Roll and the tradition has since continued, being interrupted only by inclement weather and World Wars I and II. As many as 53,000 visitors have been welcomed in the past for this annual Washington rite of spring. But, today, the number is limited to 20,000 and tickets are determined by online lottery. Every child goes home with a wooden egg signed by the President and first lady as a souvenir. The President and first lady generally attend along with other political notables and full-on celebrities. This year First Lady Michelle Obama has invited the cast of “Glee” to perform, reportedly because she, Malia and Sasha are big fans!
