How to Draw a Velociraptor Dinosaur

Velociraptor is a prehistoric reptile that lived over 80 million years ago, right around the later part of the Cretaceous Period. They were one of the fastest and one of the ferocious dinosaurs around. Even though they lived millions of years ago, the Velociraptor still was believed to be one of the smartest reptile species. They used coordination and cooperation with the other raptors in the pack to take down their prey. The word Velociraptor actually means œswift thief. The prehistoric creature gained more popularity in the movie Jurassic Park. A lot of information about the velociraptor is talked about in this flick which gives you a very vivid mental picture on how brutal this beast really was. Almost every dinosaur has a tool on their body that assists them for their hunting needs, in the raptors case not only were they fast and strategic, but they also possessed a long hook shape claw on each hind foot that is used to rip apart their prey. Out of all the dinosaurs that existed, the velociraptor is one of my all time favorites to draw. Though growing up as a kid there wasn't many dinosaur cartoons to choose from, I often read how cavemen had drawings of them in their small living holes. It kinda makes you think if dinosaurs shared the same world with the cavemen or is it just an assumption made by man. Speaking of man, did you know that the raptor was actually only up to the knee of man, and that they had feathers all over them? They kinda looked like over sized mean looking chickens. I am going to teach you how to draw a velociraptor with 9 easy steps. The tutorial is simple enough to follow, which will make it easier to learn to draw other dinosaurs. Well that's all I have to say about this prehistoric animal, it's back to the drawing board for me, until next time fellow artist.....

Step 1

In this first step what you want to do is draw two circles, with the smallest on top. This is the guide you will use for the head and the body.

Step 2

Now what you do next is sketch out the rators mouth and neck as shown above.

Step 3

In this step what you will work on is sketching out the arm, eyes, and front facing leg. When you draw the raptors face make sure you create the ferocious look, and make his mouth wide enough to see the teeth that will be drawn later on.

Step 4

Now what you do is sketch his hands that will also hold his claws and the back of the front facing leg.

Step 5

Start sketching out the line work for the back leg and finish off the hands and claws. Sketch the definition in the raptors arms as well.

Step 6

Now the detailing is what the focus will be in this step. You have to start sketching out the detail in the neck, top jaw, stomach and underbelly, and the hind legs.

Step 7

Sketch his sharp vicious teeth, tongue, and claws. Prepare your sketch for the back part of the velociraptor.

Step 8

In this step, simple lining is all you need to draw for his long tail. After you complete that, finish the details in the sketch and erase all the guidelines and sketch marks to complete your work.

Step 9

Your done. The finished sketch should resemble the image above. You can add your own personal touches to the drawing and color it if you wish to do so.
