How to Draw a Pteranodon

Hey everyone, Dawn here with another drawing tutorial, and today, we'll be œdrawing a Pteranodon. You'd be familiar with these bird like dinosaurs from the movie œJurassic Park 3, which features several attacks when the rescue crew tries to escape. I thought the scene was OK, and I'm not a fan of these strange looking creatures. In my rendition of a Pteranodon, I gave the dinosaur an attack-like pose as if it were preying on its next meal. œDrawing Pteranodons can be a bit difficult because of their heads being larger than the overall size of their bodies. What makes their appearance look strange is the large crest that stems from the back of the skull. I believe this is part of the Pteranodon's skull structure, which is pretty neat. Look at different references on Pteranodons so you can create your own original pose. For now, stick to the tutorial until you can get the hang of drawing them. Coloring these creatures requires a few references as well since they can be interpeted numerous ways. Mine used firey hues to give this beast justice. I hope you'll enjoy this tutorial, so don't forget to leave feedback on how you did! Thanks so much for viewing and have fun learning "how to draw a Pteranodon"!....

Step 1

Drawing flying dinosaurs is almost as easy as drawing cartoon dinosaurs. All you have to do is make two small shapes, one for the head, and the other for the back end. Next, add the guidelines for the beak or bill, and then the neck, and wings.

Step 2

Sketch out the head shape, and then draw out the mouth of the dinosaur which is called the bill. There is a horn like shape on top of the head, and then move to the next step where you will begin drawing out the body.

Step 3

Okay, draw more of the Pteranodon's mouth out and then proceed on to drawing out the neck, and some of the back. When that is done you can draw in the eye and nose hole.

Step 4

Believe it or not, but you are already half way done with this tutorial. Draw in the chest and belly as well as the single lining for the shoulders, and arms. You will also need to draw in the hands and arched wings too.

Step 5

Finish sketching out the wings that look a lot like boat sails, and be sure to add the tissue crinkles or creases along the underside of the Pteranodon's arm like you see here. You will also need to draw in more of the body.

Step 6

This is the last drawing step and as you can see there is really not that much to do. To finish off your Pteranodon, draw out the legs, feet, and back end of the body which looks like there is a small lump for a tail of some sorts. When that is done erase the lines and shapes that you drew in step one.

Step 7

This is the finished drawing of your Pteranodon and as you can see it looks simple, but good. Color it in and even draw a cool prehistoric background. I had fun with this lesson on drawing a Pteranodon. Join me again real soon for another tutorial.
