My Italian Origins

The story of my Italian origin will be redundant, compared to that of the “paulistas” and the Brazilian.

My mother told me her grandfathers came in 1871 from Italy to work in the coffee plantations of the State of Sao Paulo, with many other immigrants after the abolition of slavery.

They arrived in Santos and headed towards Indaiatuba, journey which must have taken much more time than today, since the roads and means of transport were more precarious. They went to the farm Pau Preto of the Bicudo family. Joao Brentan playerd the accordion and got married to Marieta Gazignatto.

They immediately started to put money aside by raising chickens and soonafter, became owners of a house they had bought at a handsome price because it was said to be haunted. When they moved in, they quickly realized that the so-called spectra were the rats running in the attic! Later, they moved towards the capital, Sao Paulo, where they settled in Ipiranga, in the industrial district.

After the social crisis of 1929, Avelino Bonora, her maternal grandfather found a work at the English factory, Linhas Corrente and Industria de Refrigerantes Antartica, a work which he was very proud of, while her grandmother worked as a dressmaker.

The paternal grandfather of my mother then arrived, with a little pocket money. He had a brother already installed here and the two men managed to open a trade very quickly: a bakery and a factory of ice. At the beginning, they settled in Bom Retiro and later in Mooca.

Some words were brought by Italians, and were integrated thereafter into our vocabulary; words such as: mamma mia, porca miséria; maledeta, of the Madonna, sbrodolare ( = to dirty oneself with sauce), gnola (= manha repetitive), gnoqui, etc.

Two songs were perpetrated in my family: “Titic Tutu Museta” and “Menelique” with which my mother rocked my childhood and with which myself, I already rock my cousins.
